AED 35 million the cost of installing 100 bus shelters as a first phase of 600 shelters in Abu Dhabi, Al Dhafra Region, and Al Ain City by the end of 2020

DOT organized a field tour for the media to learn about the latest developments in this project

Abu Dhabi– Sunday, August 12, 2018: As part of its efforts to establish an integrated and sustainable transportation system and improve the quality of services provided to the public in this sector, the Department of Transport in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (DOT) announced that the development of bus shelters in the Emirate is progressing at a full speed. The project include the installation of 400 bus shelters in Abu Dhabi, and Al Dhafra Region, and 200 in Al Ain.

Eng. Ahmed Ateeq Al Mazrouei, Advisor to the chairman of the DOT, Head of Buses and Water Ferries Team, said that the development project reflects the aspirations of the wise leadership to establish a modern transport infrastructure and a sustainable living environment in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, supported by quality services to the public transport users.

Al Mazrouei added that the project will include, in 2018, the completion of 100 shelters in Abu Dhabi and its suburbs at a total cost of 35 million dirhams, and that 23 of them have been completed so far. He pointed out that the project is in line with the increasing demand of the public transport users especially buses because of its varied and integrated routes and convenient and advanced services provided by various points and regions, including business communities, shopping centers, hotels, government and semi-governmental institutions and other service providers and other vital areas.

As part of its efforts to find innovative solutions and adopt advanced concepts in the implementation of the project, DoT is installing 20 of the above-mentioned 100 shelters, using cargo containers. These containers have been selected due to their high capacity and fast installation, especially in the city's high demand areas. These containers have also an added value reflected by their competitive cost. This comes as part of an initial step to test the efficiency of these shelters to be distributed to other areas in Abu Dhabi next year. In parallel, the Department has removed 62 old shelters in Abu Dhabi as part of an effort to eliminate distortions that negatively affect the overall appearance of the city.

The announcement was made to journalists during a media tour organized by the Department of Transport and covered a number of the bus shelters. The journalists witnessed the real progress achieved on the ground, and were briefed about expected achievements in the near future, in addition to the challenges and solutions to develop the public bus transport sector, which included the establishment of 4000 bus stops in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, stressing the continuity of the development of bus shelters in accordance with the highest international standards and practices in this field.

The new bus shelters with air conditioning systems that protect bus users from weather and atmospheric changes are equipped with sophisticated and intelligent devices, including a QR Code side panel that enables connection to the DOT Bus routes and timetables, and enabling customers to re-credit their bus cards, which reduces the congestion when boarding the bus and improve the quality of service and efficiency

It is worth noting that these achievements come within the framework of the continuous efforts of the Department of Transport to develop the transport sector and improve the quality of services provided to users of public transport through the establishment of an integrated and sustainable infrastructure that provides the best services to customers and enhance their comfort and happiness.
