Five-kilometre pilot project is expected to complete and operate by end of 2015
As part of its endeavours to build world-class, integrated and sustainable road networks, the Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi announced that it is gearing up to commence engineering design of the first green road in the Middle East. The five-kilometre pilot project will be linking existing Abu Dhabi-Dubai Main Road (E11) and the new Abu Dhabi-Dubai Main Road (E311). Construction work is expected to begin in Q1 2015.
The DoT highlights that this project will be a model for future-to-be-built roads in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi as it will support the highest sustainable practices adopted worldwide such as state-of-the-art technologies and solutions to lower carbon emissions, as well as environment-friendly construction material such as recycled asphalt/concrete aggregates and scrap rubber tires.
In addition, the project will use most efficient environment-friendly solutions such as renewable energy for lighting. Materials used in constructing the road, thanks to their precise specifications, will ensure highest levels of safety and security for vehicles as well as lower maintenance and operations cost of the road on the long run.
The green road project is one of the strategic initiatives undertaken by the DoT to attain the Surface Transport Master Plan (STMP) vision and its priorities by developing world-class and integrated road network that addresses the current and future needs of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi whilst setting an example of environment-friendly projects.
The DoT has undertaken several studies to guarantee that the best possible approaches are being utilised ensuring that the project will bring the defined objectives, one of which is building modern and environment-friendly roads as opposed to the traditional ones. The location of green road pilot project is ideal as it will not affect the traffic, due to a number of detours will be set once work commences.
The Department of Transport is collaborating with reputable international institutes and consultants as well as strategic stakeholders, namely the Urban Planning Council (UPC) Estidama Programme Team, the Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi and Masdar.
Upon completion of the Green Road pilot project, the outcomes will be evaluated, analysed and used to improve the set guidelines as well as a rating system for future implementation of green roads throughout the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
